What a way to go, a great night with over 50 Ladies attending and many thanks to everyone who made the evening a great success. The High Flyers brought a new saying to the Club and the FROGS were on fine form with 2 songs, somehow I knew that there would be an umbrella involved.
Many thanks also for the duet by Ann and Charlie, grandmother and grandaughter singing to Lady Gaga and also to Gill for her impression of Julie Andrews.......(but not quite to squeaky clean)
A great evening for me and some beautiful gifts. My thanks to the FROGS for their contribution to the Club Charity and for my pamper gift, so kind of you all.
Bec, the picture was amazing, not just I have the blog but also a fabulous framed picture with some great memories.
Plus I have my Pandora Bracelet with my first charm, a little Duck, so fitting.
So many thanks to Lady Captain Bec Smith for organising and making the evening so successful and for all the Ladies attended.
A great way to end my year
Happy Golfing

My Challenge...........
![]() |
| Charlotte, Glen, Lynne, Me, Helen, Jane, Brian |
So I finally got to play my long awaited Lady Captains Challenge and it was truly a day to remember. Bright sunshine all day and not a drop of rain and apart from not being able to complete this at Branston, I couldn't have wished for a better day.
Team Tierney were ready to go no matter what happened and I am indebted to everyone who gave up their time to come along to help out.
In addition, I cannot thank Whittington Golf Club enough for their kindness and support to ensure that we completed the Challenge within my year as Lady Captain.
A warm welcome from Mr Captain and Lady Captain greeted us as soon as we arrived, we were then joined by Lady Vice Captain and Lady President who both came back to the club later in the day to congratulate us all.
This was my 3rd team that had been assembled, my original teams in place in the preceding weeks, were unable to help out due to work commitments once the dates changed.
So a massive thanks to the following club members:
Helen Hall - for driving me safely around the course, an unexpected bonus at being given a buggy to use and also for being my guide
Lynne Clay - for keeping ahead of us for each shot taken, to spot the ball
Jane Winn - for recording the finer details of every hole including time and shots taken
Glen Walker - for relaying information back to the club house and for making us smile (roar with laughter is more appropriate)
Charlotte Barker / Trudie Hanson - for updating the Blog and Facebook hole by hole.
Mr Captain Colin Shaw - for being there
Finally, last but not least, wonderful, patient, long suffering hubby Brian who basically masterminded the whole thing - I couldn't have done this without him
The story that unfolded as the Challenge took place was a joy to read when I returned home and a great memory of a great day.

Lady Captains Challenge - Final Update
The end of a lovely day. So sad this was not possible at Branston...but the weather did it's best to scupper all attempts at Lady Captain's Challenge.
Fortunately Whittington have enabled us to honour Lady C's fundraising commitment and it is expected that Kim will have raised over £1000 for British Heart Foundation by her efforts today
Total time 3:56:27 with 165 shots (141 nett) - the most amazing effort by Lady C ...and rightly the sun shines on the righteous
Thanks to Lynn for spotting, Glenn for keeping Charlotte and Trudie up to date with on-course evens, Helen for guiding, Brain for lining up (sort of), Jane for scoring, |Mr Captain for offering support, and Burt for use of blindfold (for which Brian has further uses at the end of Valentine's Day.....)
To everyone who has supported the day..and pledged your funds.... time to honour (or double) your commitment.
http://www.justgiving.com/user/32297716 for direct donations, or cheques to Branston Golf and Country Club Charity Account PLEASE

Lady Captains Challenge - 18th hole
The 18th 414 yards par 5 ...16 shots after a bit of an excursion into the "scrubby stuff". Mr Captain here to support and offer advice on the final green.
14.07 - 14.24............

Lady Captains Challenge - 17th hole
Penultimate hole (that's the 17th to you) par 4, 334 yards 13.54-14.03 so nearly at the 4 hour mark.
7 shots . A fantastic score...but Glen still thinks we should sack the liner-upperer (that'll be Brian then!!)

Lady Captains Challenge - 16th hole
16th hole. par 4 13.40 - 13.51 and 13 shots.
Got a bit "stuck" in the gorse (must be fun wading through that blindfolded!!) but a creditable 13 shots considering
Lynn pictured below trying to "wave" the ball into the hole.................................
Lining up for 16th drive !

Lady Captains Challenge - 15th hole
Another par 3 on hole 15 - just 177 yards and 7 shots for Kim (1332-1338) sounds like a good final putt - to quote Glenn it "just plopped in the hole for seven"
Lady Captains Challenge - 14th hole
Hole 14, which we are advised has a very tricky sloping green, a short par 5 for ladies (406 yards).
1317 - 13.30 and a tidy 9 shots from lady C
1317 - 13.30 and a tidy 9 shots from lady C
Lady Captains Challenge - 13th hole
13th (13.12-13.15) Lady members in the clubhouse tell us this is a nice par three, made very tricky by surrounding bunkers. Kim however (perhaps not SEEING the bunkers is an advantage!!) shoots a very tidy 4.
Well done Lady C !!!
Well done Lady C !!!
Lady Captains Challenge - 12th hole
Hole 12. Stroke index one and a long par 4 for ladies (373 yards).
12.56-13.10, 11 shots which isn't bad considering !!!!!
12.56-13.10, 11 shots which isn't bad considering !!!!!
Lady Captains Challenge - 11th hole
12.45 - 12.55 pm . Still sunny, but a bit on the chilly side
8 shots.
8 shots.
Lady Captains Challenge - 10th hole
12.32 - 12.43. 9 shots on the tenth (360 yard par 4)
Charlie and Trudie noted mild hysteria from the rest of the team at the halfway house - not sure if that is the effect of the cold, the hip flask or Glenn's sense of humour. But there is an advantage helping Lady C's support team from the warmth of the Whittington clubhouse!!

Lady Captains Challenge - 9th hole
Half way round now. Started 11.59 and finished 12.13 - so in total two hours and four minutes for nine holes.
Getting better with the air shots, as 11 to the hole this time, with a little help from the tree on the right of the fairway which facilitated a neat little ricochet to the fringe.
No questions to be asked about Glen's buggy-driving capabilities please !!
Thanks to the Whittington members who made a donation at the half way house and hope that they won't hold US up as we have played them through......

Lady Captains Challenge - 8th hole
Started 11.45 - finished 11.57. 10 shots
Brian beginning to feel that he is being "got at" ............ 5:1 against. No chance of being right there then.
Lynn is doing a marvellous job of "spotting" the ball, walking ahead of play, and Jane has assumed the role of "record-keeper-in-chief" Good job she has legible handwriting even in gloves and swaddled up in about six layers of clothing. Might be sunny out there, but it's a bit nippy!!

Lady Captains Challenge - 7th hole
Lady C has, apparently, just freshened up the lippy . Though I have no idea how she managed that with a blindfold on !!
7th hole (par 3 164 yards) completed, and Brian is already resorting to nips from the hip flask.Glenn reports that he has been over-ruled 5:1 by the ladies on course management!!
11.34 - 11.43. 9 shots.

Lady Captains Challenge - 6th hole
Helen's guidance must be working......
Glenn has gone all excited as the 6th has gone really well....Amazing 150 yard second shot from valley to the edge of the green
3 fantastic shots from the tee and almost sank the first putt.
11.25 - 11.32 5, yes I said 5 shots on a par 4 !!

Lady Captains Challenge - 5th hole
Well they are still talking to each other (despite the "Heather") !!!
Just completed hole 5. (11.12-11.22). Total shots 8 (single figures...yey !!)
The worry is that \Glenn is out on the course singing...." The Sun Has Got His Hat On.........."
Lady Captains Challenge - 4th hole
Hole 4 complete.... "Don't mention the heather Brian!!" - 15" putt hit the hole but it popped straight back out Well recovered at the next attempt.....
Start time 11.01, completed at 11.10 (12 shots / 2 air shots)
Start time 11.01, completed at 11.10 (12 shots / 2 air shots)
Lady Captains Challenge - 3rd hole
3rd complete. Jane W comments from the tee that this has been the "best hole yet". Brian is apparently multi-tasking, guiding |Kim and throwing divots at Glenn.........
Start time 10.48, hole completed at 11.00 with ten shots.
Onwards now to the fourth which the members here in the clubhouse advise me has been voted "best par three in the Midlands" Hope Kim can keep this one in single figures.....

Lady Captains Challenge - 2nd hole
Finished the second in record time. Ten minutes tee to green. (10.32 - 10.42) . 13 shots with one air shot. Finished with a beautiful chip and run to within four foot of the hole and two putts with the second toying with the idea of falling before unfortunately hanging on to the edge of the cup by a cat's whisker!!
On to hole 2
From first (to quote Mrs Walker "Awesome ....wee..wow!!!") drive at 10.09, Kim completed the first hole in ten shots (plus one air shot) at 10.29
one down, seventeen to go ...who is coming to Whittington to see Lady Captain home down the 18th.??
Will keep the blog updated hole by hole so that you can see her progress. Pity she is blindfolded...it's a beautiful day out there.
pic above shows the Lady C & support team. Left to right, Charlotte, Glenn, Lynn, Kim, Helen, Jane and Brian

Lady Captains Challenge - 1st hole
Well they are off (at 1010) - Kim's blindfold is firmly in place and will remain there until the 18th Green is completed
Watching from the club house and Kim is safely off the first with a beautiful second shot straight up the middle of the fairway. We are watching red "British Heart Foundation" t-shirts receding into the distance against a lovely blue sky.
This Captain's challenge has been challenging in so many ways..... despite all obstacles . This will be a Valentine's Day to remember, assuming Helen (Hall) has managed to prevent marital tiffs whilst assuming her guiding duties...............
Let's surprise Kim with an uplift of donations to her charity BHF. Donate directly to Just Giving through link below... or it's not tool to to sign up on sponsor sheets back in Branston

Lady Captains Challenge - Ready to Go....
Lady Captain's Challenge Team is assembled and ready to go. Blessed with the weather, given yesterday's snow, and the course is fully open and looks beautiful in early Spring sunshine. Thank you to Whittington Golf Club for hospitality and courtesy. Whittington's Lady Captain, Patricia Davies has been to pass good luck messages from herself and Mr Captain |Barry Broad.
The good news is that rabbit-hole hazards are being averted by use of a buggy.
